We all live in a culture driven world. We act a certain way in our lives depending on when and where we are. When on the job we listen to our boss and to the customers. When at a party we are more carefree with whom we communicate. Just like in the situations just mentioned, we act in a certain kind of way when we network.
If you are just starting out to start the process, there are a few ideas you should think about.
Sometimes we are in such a rush we forget about the little things that are happening all around us. Little clues about things not going right that might need your attention.
Money isn't the only motivator for people. Sometimes the thank you you give is worth more than the raise at the end of the year to keep someone happy. Maybe you notice someone needing an extra hand because they thought they could accomplish a certain project alone. You might step in to help out a bit, not to completely take over the project.
Are you a busy person and find yourself saying yes to everything people ask you to do? Maybe you just show up to work & dive into it without thinking..fast forward a few hours and then wonder why you are always behind? Then again maybe you get distracted from your main goals to work on someone else’s project. Whatever the case, your lack of control of your time is hurting you. Here are the facts-1. There are only so many hours in a week. 2. People will always ask for your help and you will always have your own list of things you have to do.
We always need a little extra help when it comes to business needs. A lot of times, we simply don’t have the money in order to employ the professionals. If you take your time, you will find exactly what you are looking for. I use Google for much of the work we do at Network Today. With a simple search, you can find ways that may help you do things better. If it is accounting, marketing or even human resources- you can find tools that will allow you to work more efficiently.
Ok-So, you have joined more than one group hoping to get big sales & build your personal mega network. The question most members have is how do you give solid referrals to each group? If you are working both ends of the room at the same time-How do you figure in an even exchange of business? Some members would say you can’t & you are shutting out members. Others would say you are making sure the right person gets the sale or job. It is a slippery slope no matter how you look at it.
In our lives we go through “Resets” …..moments in time that have us starting over. Everything from finishing school to starting a new career-it can appear to be a never-ending cycle. Each beginning starts off the same. We are introduced to new people & a new set of career details. New leaders are introduced to help guide us on our way & provide team objectives that need to be met. In other words, it’s like starting at square one.
In business, we always hear “No offense, it’s just business”. We see people doing things to get ahead & to feed their own egos. We see the blame game & we see drama. What we don’t see, alot of the time, are the good things in business. For example, the “behind the scene” person that does things to silently promote or make things better but never receives any credit. The funny thing is, we all know there is someone who does this, but we don’t always know who they are.
What does that mean? Well, I think about it like this. When you are looking for work, you are actively building your promo kit. This includes your resume, cover letters, references, putting together a wardrobe, getting your social media fully up-to-date and maybe even a website to fully advertise “You”. You are also setting up meetings, going to networking events & even joining a network group or two. You’ve put yourself out there & you need to….and not just when you are looking for a job.
This is an excellent question as there many groups that seem to have a lot of great members simply because they are popular. But what about the exchange of referrals? Is it happening & is it a fair exchange? What is it that you bring to the table or in this case, the networking group? As a member of any networking group, you are always on the look out for people you can refer business to. In order to be effective, you need to remember not to keep all your eggs in one basket. In other words-spread the wealth.
